Khulekani Msweli was born 1984 in the farming town of Vuvulane, Swaziland. He completed his high school at Waterford Kamhlaba, Swaziland. Through his passion for art and fashion, he went on to study art and fashion design in England. In 2006 he completed a Diploma in Art and Design at Southport College, UK. He then went on to study towards a BA(Hons.) degree in Fashion Design with Technology at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. In 2007, London, he was awarded with the Fashion Designers and Crafters (FDC), Avant-Garde Young Designer of the Year Award. In 2009 he launched his own fashion label, JEREMPAUL, which has been showcased during London Fashion Week and now operates from the Art Centre, Swaziland.
Since returning to Swaziland, Khulekani has been able to concentrate more time and energy on pursuing visual arts. In terms of visual arts, Khulekani focuses primarily on contemporary art and installations. He is inspired by the world around him – current affairs, social issues, and artwork of all mediums – and is especially interested in portraying the ever-present dichotomy between ‘traditional’ and ‘contemporary’. His artwork functions to express his perspective or ideas, or to provoke the audience to explore their own. His artwork is meant to be seen – to inspire, catalyze, challenge, and illustrate the happenings of everyday life.
Khulekani draws inspiration from a wide range of areas, his faith being one of them, his sense of humour being another. He has developed an interesting way of combining materials – and his sense of design and proportion (necessary for his fashion) influence his work in visual arts. He sees potential in all stimuli, and his work is original. He is unique in his ability to explore the bridge between ancient and modern thought processes, rituals, styles, and cultures – a dichotomy which is especially relevant in Swaziland.
Khulekani's design and art ability have made him one of Swaziland's rising entrepreneurs. He is currently runs JEREMPAUL design and has future plans of building an all-encompassing JEREMPAUL lifestyle centre.
